If you install your mods once more the game should work, as we didn’t change scripts and their relation to code. It’s due to the fact that if Steam sees an update, it compares the files you have with the files on servers and overrides them if there’s a difference. If you had mods installed it may happen that this update resulted in game not starting. We had to add Simplified Chinese strings file, update the executable and one of patch.bundle files for that. Hey, we’ve added support for Simplified Chinese. Update: Here is the official statement from CD Project Red on this new update.
As it stands though, we are as clueless as you on why this update was suddenly released out of nowhere, which has also led to users c omplaining that the game is crashing now. As for the patch notes, we will update this article once any information is released for it. The size of the update is rather large though, even if it was supposed to be a minor one. It is too early to tell, but it can be a simple localization-related fix for the game. You can see that the files that were altered in this update include the main binary files for The Witcher 3 and speech files in the various languages. Steam Database has listed the files that were changed in this update, and it mostly seems to be for the localization.
It doesn’t seem to come with any official patch notes from the developers. The Witcher 3 has received a new update on Steam out of nowhere.
